What is Gas and gas pains

Gas in your digestive system is a part of normal digestion. Burping and flatus gets rid of excessive gas.

Eating foods that are more likely to produce gas may result in an increase in gas or gas pain.

Certain conditions like irritable bowel syndrome or celiac disease-in addition to other signs and symptoms-can cause increase in gas and gas pain.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of gas and gas pains include:

  • Burping.
  • Passing gas.
  • Pain, cramps, or knotted feeling in your abdomen.
  • Bloating. A feeling of pressure or fullness in your abdomen.
  • Distention. An observable increase in the size of your abdomen.
  • When to see a doctor

Burping is normal especially during night or after a meal. Burping and passing gas are rarely by themselves a sign of a medical problem. Gas or gas pains accompanied by other sign and symptoms may indicate more serious condition. Seek medical help if you experience any of these additional signs and symptoms:

  • Bloody stool.
  • Constipation or diarrhea.
  • Unexplained weight loss.
  • Persistent or recurrent nausea or vomiting.
  • Prolonged abdominal pain.
