Diverticulitis: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment Options

Diverticulitis is a common but serious digestive condition that can cause abdominal pain, bowel irregularities, and other complications if left untreated. At Colon & Digestive Health Specialists (CDH), we provide comprehensive care for patients suffering from diverticulitis, guided by Karim Shakoor, M.D, a board-certified gastroenterologist with extensive experience in digestive health disorders.

What is Diverticulitis?

The inflammation or infection of diverticula, which are tiny, protruding pouches that can develop in the walls of your colon, is known as diverticulitis.
Diverticulosis is the term for the condition that causes these pouches, which are common, particularly after the age of 40.
Diverticulitis, which can result from inflammation or infection of these pouches, can cause fever, changes in bowel habits, and excruciating abdominal pain.

Symptoms and Causes of Diverticulitis

What Are the Symptoms of Diverticulitis?

Diverticulitis symptoms can vary in intensity depending on the severity of the infection or inflammation. Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent or sudden pain in the lower left abdomen
  • Fever and chills
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Constipation or, in some cases, diarrhea
  • Abdominal bloating or cramping
  • Tenderness in the lower abdomen
  • Loss of appetite

What Causes Diverticulitis?

The exact cause of diverticulitis is not fully understood, but several risk factors can increase your chances of developing it:

  • Low-fiber diet: Lack of dietary fiber leads to hard stools and increased pressure on the colon wall.
  • Aging: Risk increases after age 40.
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Certain medications like NSAIDs and steroids
  • Genetics and family history of diverticular disease

A poor diet, particularly low in fiber, is one of the leading contributors. Dr. Karim Shakoor often recommends a high-fiber diet or low-FODMAP foods to reduce symptoms and prevent flare-ups

How Is Diverticulitis Diagnosed?

Physical examination: Examining the abdomen for masses or sore spots..

Tests on blood: To identify inflammation or infection.

CT Scan (Computed Tomography):
Diverticulitis can be confirmed and its severity assessed most accurately with a CT scan (Computerized Tomography).

Colonoscopy: Usually not performed during an acute attack, this procedure may be planned for after recovery in order to rule out other gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease or colon cancer.

Management and Treatment of Diverticulitis

Mild Diverticulitis:

  • Antibiotics to treat infection
  • Liquid or low-fiber diet to allow the colon to heal
  • Pain management
  • Gradual reintroduction of fiber-rich foods as symptoms improve

Moderate to Severe Diverticulitis:

  • Intravenous antibiotics and fluids
  • Hospitalization for observation and supportive care
  • Surgical intervention in case of abscess, perforation, or repeated attacks

Preventive Care:

  • High-fiber diet (whole grains, fruits, and vegetables)
  • Regular exercise
  • Adequate hydration
  • Avoid smoking and limit red meat intake
